Hood lengths to suit how you carry the 400-800
The FE 400-800mm G is a birding and safari zoom, which means it spends as much time being carried and packed as it does shooting. One fixed hood length cannot serve both.
Ours come in lengths from 45mm to 135mm. Take a short one when the lens has to fit a bag or a vehicle door pocket, and a long one when you are in a hide and want every bit of shade on the front element.
Each is a bayonet mount that clicks on like the original ALC-SH181, with no adapter ring. Grooved interior to suppress reflections, and every length checked for vignetting across the zoom range. Mount forward or reverse it to pack.

About the 3D printing. It is not hobby filament. It is glass-reinforced engineering plastic, printed by us in the USA, that resists heat and moisture.

Well made and with a good fit. More easy to handle then the original Nikon hood and cap. Thats what you need :)

I love the size and quality of the hood. My only concern is that the “lock” doesn’t appear to be very strong and I worry about losing it in the field. If it locked in like the original it would be perfect!
