The FE 300mm F2.8 GM is the lightest 300mm f/2.8 ever made at 1,470g, which is exactly why people shoot it handheld on the sideline all day. The soft cover Sony includes does not suit that. It is slow off, slow on, and it goes in a pocket the moment things get busy.
This cap is made for the front of this lens and clicks straight on, no adapter ring and nothing to thread. Two stainless springs hold it, so it comes off with one hand and goes back the same way, gloves on. The raised anti-slip ring lets you stand the lens on its face on a bench or the boot of a car between innings.
It clears the Sony hood mounted forward or reversed, so you never have to take the hood off to cap the lens.
Shooting with a shorter hood? This lens is also covered by our variable-length CamDec hoods, 45mm to 121mm. Add one from the options above and save $10 versus buying separately.
About the 3D printing. It is not hobby filament. It is fiberglass-reinforced engineering plastic, printed by us in the USA, with stainless steel screws and springs. One owner put it best: “very sturdy, solid and extremely well made, fits like a glove.”

I was somewhat put off by the 3d printer aspect but the lens cap is very sturdy, solid and extremely well made - fits like a glove. I also bought the hood because of the shorter mount - also fits perfectly. It was delivered to me in BC one month BEFORE the predicted date of delivery - There was an unexpected customs charge of $24.
Love the lens covers. Easy to place and remove. Durable quality and look great!
This lens cap fits perfectly, and it feels more secure and sturdy than my other OEM caps.
