A proper hard cap for the 400-800

The pinch cap Sony supplies with the FE 400-800mm G is the same design used on a kit zoom. It is fine in a drawer and awkward on a 2,475g birding lens that gets pulled in and out of a bag at a hide, usually one-handed, usually in a hurry.

This is a solid hard cap made specifically for this lens. It comes off with one hand instead of two fingers, gloves on, and the raised anti-slip ring means you can stand the lens on its face while you swap bodies without it sliding off a flat surface.

It clears the ALC-SH181 hood mounted forward or reversed, so the hood can stay on.

Made for this lens, not a generic size. The 400-800 has a deeper front section than most lenses sharing its filter thread, so this cap is built to that profile rather than to a standard measurement. Variable-length hoods available. We make bayonet hoods for this lens in lengths from 45mm to 135mm, so you can run a short one for travel and a long one when you are set up and staying put.

About the 3D printing. It is not hobby filament. It is fiberglass-reinforced engineering plastic, printed by us in the USA, with stainless steel screws and springs.
